Stock Tank vs a Dedicated Quarantine System

Using a stock tank for koi quarantine vs a permanent setup: cost, filtration, heating, observation and why quarantine matters most.

The short version

A food-grade stock tank with a sponge or box filter, a heater and aeration is a perfectly good quarantine system and costs very little. A permanent plumbed setup is more convenient and unnecessary for most keepers. Use a stock tank, because the important thing is that quarantine happens at all, not how elegant it is.

Choose the Rubbermaid Stock Tank, 50 Gallon if…

You are adding fish. New koi are the main route for parasites and disease into an established pond, and losing a collection to something a three week quarantine would have caught is a common and avoidable disaster.

Choose the Pond Filter Brushes, 10 Pack if…

Keep spare media running in your main filter so a quarantine tank is instantly cycled. Brushes or sponges seeded in the pond filter mean the quarantine system has biological capacity from day one rather than cycling with a stressed new fish in it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should koi quarantine last?

Commonly three to four weeks, warm enough that any parasites present become active and visible. Cold quarantine can hide problems that appear later in the main pond.

What should I watch for?

Flashing, clamped fins, isolation, laboured breathing, ulcers and anything on the skin or gills. Observation is most of what quarantine achieves.

Can I quarantine in a bucket?

Not adequately. Koi need volume, filtration and aeration, and a stressed fish in poor water shows symptoms that come from the quarantine rather than from disease.
